A new study in the UK finds that people who buy Viagra at Boots have a more than 20 times higher chance of developing pulmonary arterial hypertension than do those who buy a cheaper generic version.
Dr Graham Jackson, head of the University of Leeds and director of the UK pulmonary hypertension research programme, said: “We are delighted to have found this out, given that our findings support earlier work showing that Viagra is safe and effective for most men and that it also improves survival and prevents disease.”
In the study, published in the journal British Journal of Cardiology, researchers found that those who did not take Viagra for at least 5 years had a lower risk of heart attack than those who did, but were also at an increased risk of stroke.
Viagra is available as tablets in 25mg, 50mg and 100mg strengths.
Viagra was the first pill for pulmonary hypertension to be approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1998.
It is also one of the world’s most popular medicines and was the first to be made available on prescription in the UK.
The study was led by researchers from the University of Leeds, Medical Research Council, the University of Southampton and the University of Nottingham.

“This study supports the UK’s commitment to make sure that patients with pulmonary hypertension can have the best possible life and quality of life, as well as the best available treatment options for this condition.
“As well as improving survival in patients with pulmonary hypertension, the study also supports the ongoing work by the National Pulmonary Hypertension Education and Research Network (NPHERSN) to further study the safety and effectiveness of Viagra in patients with this condition.”
